Who we are

We are Nelson and Michelle, and we believe that travel opens doors, to new cultures, new experiences, and meaningful connections with people and communities. More than just visiting places, travel is about discovering different ways of life and gaining a deeper understanding of the world.

Opengate was founded by Michelle from Switzerland and Nelson from Tanzania. Michelle first came to Tanzania as a volunteer in 2021 and quickly fell in love with the country, its people, and its culture. What began as a volunteer experience grew into a lifelong connection, and today she lives in Tanzania, working alongside Nelson to support local communities.

Together, we combine international perspectives with local knowledge to create authentic and responsible travel experiences.

We offer both travel and volunteer programs that can be booked independently or combined into one journey. Whether you want to explore Tanzania’s landscapes, experience local traditions, or engage in community projects, we design experiences that go beyond traditional tourism.

With personal guidance, local expertise, and a multilingual team (English, German, Swahili, and Italian), we ensure every guest feels supported and welcomed throughout their journey.
